Yoghurt makers
Yoghurt makers simplify the process of making yoghurt at home, primarily because they control the temperature exactly during the several hours need during the preparation process.
The yoghurt makers have different characteristics (and prices) according to your requirements:
- Some produce one large batch of yoghurt, others produce several 'individual portions'
- Some machines produce larger quantities - typically 2 litres, 1 litre, or 6-8 portions are made per batch
- Some have glass containers for the yoghurt (usually with machines producing individual portions) others have plastic containers
- Different methods of heat transfer are used to keep a consistent temperature
- Some yoghurt makers have auto-shutoff when the process is complete, and some others issue an audible warning
- Ensure the parts are dishwasher safe if required (they usually are)
- If buying a yoghurt maker with individual glass containers spares are usually provided in case of breakage
- Most (but not all) yoghurt makers are supplied with a recipe book
- Different lengths of guarantee are offered
Notes:
the power consumption of a yoghurt maker is low (typically 10-13 watts) so electrical cost is negligible.
all maintain a temperature of somewhere between 41 and 47 centigrade (105 and 115 fahrenheit)
